MILLINGTON, TN (JULY 2, 2015) – PS 1 Dwayne Lynch and a team at Naval Support Activity Mid-South PERS-9 were looking for a community improvement project when they contacted Kate Armitage, Director of Arts, Recreation and Parks. “Having a list of needed improvement projects as long as my arm, I am always thrilled to hear from anyone interested in community service,” said Kate Armitage, Director Arts, Recreation, Parks and Communications. “I quickly rattled off a list of projects hoping one may be of interest.” Mr. Lynch spoke with others at NSA Mid-South and they agreed to take on a project at Aycock Park.
Aycock Park is the most frequently used park in Millington. Family reunions, birthday parties and other events are often hosted there. Aycock features a nice playground area, tennis courts, and walking trail with plenty of shade from the beautiful, mature trees. While Aycock Park is beautiful, it is aging and in need of a little love and attention. The City of Millington is fortunate to have plenty of greenspace. The parks are a tremendous asset to the community, but require maintenance. When parks and public spaces are well-maintained, they are utilized more frequently and can become a great source of civic pride. The plan is to transform Aycock Park, a nice, yet deteriorating park into a well-maintained park with beauty and charm that will be enjoyed by the community for many years to come. The scope of work for that day was to breathe new life into an old, unsightly bridge. It was hot that Saturday and the work was long and tedious, but the end result was beautiful.
Painting the old bridge is the first of numerous improvement projects planned for Aycock Park. Fresh coats of paint on the pavilion, picnic tables and a smaller bridge, as well as resurfacing the walking trail and landscape improvements are all plans in the works for the park.
“It was a pleasure to work alongside these outstanding men and women who invested their free time in an improvement project to strengthen pride in our community,” said Armitage. “They not only serve our beloved country day in and day out, but with kind and selfless hearts seek out additional ways to be of service within their community. Thank you to PS 1 Dwayne Lynch and his fellow sailors from NSA Mid-South PERS -9, you make Millington a better place to live.”
