MILLINGTON POLICE DEPARTMENT OFFERS TIPS FOR A SAFE HALLOWEEN 2014
MILLINGTON, TN (OCTOBER 31, 2014) - Halloween is a very exciting time and a cherished tradition, but the excitement of the night may cause both children and adults to forget about being careful and safe. Here are a few safety reminders from the Millington Police Department to help ensure a safe holiday.
Motorists
• If you have to drive on Halloween evening, be especially alert for children darting out from between parked cars.
• Be observant and attentive to children walking on streets, medians and curbs.
• Use caution when entering and exiting driveways and alleys.
• At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing.
• Lower you speed to allow for emergency stopping should a child run into your path.
Parents
• Always ensure that an adult or an older responsible youth will be supervising the outing for children under age 12.
• Plan and discuss the route trick-or-treaters intend to follow and know the names of the children’s companions.
• Instruct your children to travel only in familiar areas and along the routes you have discussed.
• Teach your children to stop at only houses or apartments that are well lit and NEVER enter a stranger’s home.
• Establish a return time for the outing.
• Instruct your youngsters to not eat any treat until they return home.
• Pin a slip of paper with the child’s name, address and phone number inside a pocket or costume in case the child gets lost or separated from the group.
• Pick your child’s costume carefully and ensure that it fits properly.
• If a mask is worn ensure that it has nose and mouth openings and large eye holes.
Trick-or-Treaters on the Trail
• Trick-or-treat in a group of friends, never alone and always let your parents or some other responsible adult know where you are going.
• Trick-or-Treaters should NEVER enter a stranger’s home, apartment or car.
• Only go to houses with a porch light on.
• Walk; do not run, from house to house.
• Do not cross yards and lawns where unseen objects or uneven terrain can present trip hazards.
• Stay in well lit areas.
• Walk on sidewalks, not in the streets. If there is no sidewalk, walk at the far edge of the roadway facing traffic. Do not use alleyways.
• Always cross the street on the corners and observe for on-coming vehicles. Never assume the driver sees you.
The Millington Police Department wants everyone to have a safe and happy Halloween. Both children and adults need to think about safety on this annual day of make-believe. The most common dangers on Halloween are from falls and pedestrian/car accidents. Although tampering is very rare, all treats should be sorted and examined. A parent or someone else responsible should closely examine all treats and throw away any that appear spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious. When in doubt, throw it out! Have a happy and safe Halloween!!
