CITY OF MILLINGTON AND MILLINGTON MUNICIPAL SCHOOL DISTRICT MAKING HISTORY
MILLINGTON, TENNESSEE (JUNE 16, 2014) – Tremendous progress has been made since the installation of the Millington Municipal School District in December of 2013. The flurry of activity has produced a multitude of accomplishments in the history of the fledgling school district. The selection of MMS's first superintendent, the appointment of new principals for Millington Middle and High Schools and the long-term lease agreement offered by the City of Millington providing a long term base of operations for MMS are a few of the more notable achievements.
The actions of Millington’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen tonight added to the list of landmark achievements as the City of Millington voted to appropriate $800,000 for the Millington Municipal Schools’ Fiscal 2015 Budget. The funds are derived from the ½ cent sales tax money remaining from the current fiscal year ending June 30, 2014 and will be appropriated into the School’s Fiscal 2015 Budget for their fund balance. A resolution was also adopted by the City of Millington and MMS to set up a sub-account with the City for non-educator staff on a defined benefit plan with Tennessee’s Consolidated Retirement System. Additionally, the City’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved the School District’s Budget, including $1,300,000 from the ½ cent local sales tax fund for School Operations for next Fiscal Year without a property tax increase.
The creation of Millington Municipal Schools is a monumental decision and a daunting task. Education is not only the acquisition of knowledge and learning of fact, but the installation of a desire to learn which ultimately results in valuable citizens within a community. The City of Millington is proud to support the Millington Municipal School District and eagerly looks forward to an exciting year of new opportunities.
