Posted on: March 25, 2019[ARCHIVED] SUSPECT TAKEN INTO CUSTODY
On Monday, March 25, 2019 at 9:35 am, the Millington Police Department went to the Admiralty Inn at 8181 US Highway 51 N, searching for Lawrence Mendez who was under suspicion of rape. When officers located Mendez in Room #227 of the hotel, he produced a knife and proceeded to threaten officers and himself. The officers retreated from the room, and the suspect barricaded himself in it, saying that he would not return to jail, but would take his own life instead.
The Millington Police Department requested assistance from the Shelby County Sheriff's SWAT and Hostage Negotiation Team. After three hours of negotiation, the suspect was taken into custody. Lawrence Mendez will be charged with criminal assault and two counts of aggravated assault. The investigation continues with other charges pending.
