FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MERGE 2015 - MILLINGTON, TENNESSEE THANKS YOU!
MILLINGTON, TN (JULY 3, 2015) – The MERGE program at 1st Baptist Church brought youth from multiple states to Millington, TN last week. 190 youth worked side by side with the City of Millington Arts, Recreation and Parks and Public Works Departments to implement City – wide improvement projects. Millington’s City Beautiful Commission pitched in to fund the landscape improvements throughout the City. Through this collaborative effort, these middle school and high school aged children worked for three half days to beautify the City of Millington.
Some of their work included painting park pavilions, bathrooms, picnic tables, grandstands and storage buildings at Centennial Park, Lions Park, Biloxi Fields, and USA Stadium. Through support from Millington’s City Beautiful Commission, they also weeded, landscaped and mulched flowerbeds on Navy Road, the Harvell Civic Center, Millington City Hall, Millington Public Library, Millington Farmers’ Market, Biloxi Fields and USA Stadium. These outstanding young people invested 2280 hours of hard work and service into the Millington Community. Those hours multiplied by $7.25 per hour equate to $16,530.00 of time, energy and love donated.
“Well-maintained and beautiful parks and public spaces are utilized more frequently and build civic pride, said Kate Armitage, Director Millington Arts, Recreation and Parks. “What these children were able to accomplish in 3 half days is nothing short of amazing! I hope as a community we follow their example. May we all take pride in our community, seek out opportunities to improve our community today and for years to come,” said Armitage. On behalf of the City of Millington, thank you to 1st Baptist Church, the MERGE coordinators and all the young people who served Millington. You make Millington a better place to live.
