CITY OF MILLINGTON SUPPORTS MILLINGTON MUNICIPAL SCHOOLS
MILLINGTON, TN (JUNE 29, 2015) – The City of Millington is aware of the regrettable decision recently made by the Millington Municipal School Board to explore possible legal action against the City of Millington, which serves as the school's funding body.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen carry the heavy burden of funding all of the necessary components of a successful City. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen strive to provide the best possible services for all citizens.
The City of Millington has been and continues to be supportive of Millington Municipal Schools and is proud of MMS's accomplishments. This support has been demonstrated repeatedly through the actions of the board as outlined below:
In FY 14, the City was required to provide zero funding for the schools. However, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen provided $701,701.00 in school funding.
In FY 15, the City was required to provide $239, 576.00 in school funding. However, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen provided $1.3 million for operational funding and $800,000 to create a fund balance for the schools, totaling $2.1 million in school funding. Additionally, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a long term lease providing the central office headquarters for Millington Municipal Schools. The rent is $1.00 per year for 40 years.
In the FY15 budget, the City of Millington is required to provide $247,807.00 in funding. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen will provide $500,000 in operational funding to the schools, plus $233,000.00 to cover Millington Municipal Schools' payment to Shelby County Schools, and an estimated $800,000.00 to address the inadequate drainage and deteriorating road conditions around Millington Central High School. This totals over $1.5 million dollars in direct and indirect support for Millington Municipal Schools.
The City of Millington continues to fund Millington Municipal Schools well above what is required and will continue to act in the best interest of our children and our entire community.
