FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MILLINGTON, TENNESSEE (January 13, 2014) If you ask Tommy Rogers to tell you what he does at USA Stadium, he smiles and humbly says, “I’ve always called myself the General Flunky,” but nothing could be further from the truth. Rogers has been a constant at USA Stadium for the last 18 years. From 1986 - 1996 when USA Stadium served as the official training facility for the USA Olympic Baseball Team, Rogers was the first one there each morning and last one to leave each night. Rogers is one of those uniquely wonderful individuals who loves his work and takes great pride in doing it as well as it can be done.
He has logged many miles driving countless players on the bus, managed concessions, served as Assistant Tournament Director, sold tickets, printed tickets, worked the field, pulled tarps, etc. Simply put, Rogers has always and continues to go out of his way to ensure that players, coaches, parents and fans have the best possible baseball experience while at USA Stadium in Millington.
"As the past chair of NJCAA baseball, I have observed Tommy go above and beyond to help coaches, players and families enjoy Division II baseball in Millington. Tommy was the assistant tournament director for Division II baseball at USA Stadium for the first 17 years of the program, during which he was a very beneficial component. He provided a great deal of leadership during our early history in making Division II baseball what it is today," said Harold Oetting, Past Chair NJCAA Baseball Committee.
Tommy Rogers was surprised when he learned recently that he was being inducted into the National Junior College Baseball Hall of Fame. A rare honor indeed, but even more special because this prestigious award has only honored a handful of people who are not coaches.
In the words of Andrew Baylock, Former USA and University of Connecticut Baseball Coach in a letter of recommendation, “Tommy Rogers is and always has been the unsung hero always behind the scenes accommodating teams, players, coaches and families,”
Rogers will be honored and receive his award on May 24 in Grand Junction.
